Wand Basics
In a popular book, it is said that, it is the wand that chooses the wizard.
This is because only the right wand will feel and perform properly. When you hold the right wand, you will know it to your very core.

How do wands work?
A wand works to focus and amplify the wizard's energies. It is not necessary to have a wand for performing magic.
Every magical object has a resonance; Mundanes call it a waveform in their quantum physics. Every human being has their own resonance. Different wands have different properties and resonances; it is these that focus your energy.

Choosing the Right Wand
First, remember that the wand itself is not the source of the power. You, the user, are the source of power, the source of "magic." The wand is simply a tool to focus your thoughts and intentions, allowing you to use and master the natural laws of manifestation. When using a wand, your desires and mental images merge with your emotions, beliefs, and your life or circumstances can change.
So how do you select the right wand for your purpose?
Your wand will become a very personal tool, and there are some qualities it simply must have. The look of it needs to speak to your heart because this opens the channel to your power. Wands can be ornate and beautiful or plain and inspectacular. What is important is that you should feel solidly grounded when you hold it, and it should inspire in you a full sense of your personal power.
When choosing a wand, note which wands you like the best, close your eyes, and assess the physical and emotional responses you have to each one. Besides your own response to the wand, there are subtle energies intrinsic to the wand that will help you accomplish your task. The materials and elements that make up the wand, such as crystals, gemstones, craftsmanship, colors, and symbols, all carry subtle vibrations of their own and these enhance the energy field surrounding you and your wand. See if you can pick up a sense of these qualities from the wand pictures and descriptions.
Select a wand that resonates with qualities you want to empower in yourself. The wand can be big enough to sit on your altar, or small enough to wear around your neck; the size is totally your preference. Many wands are designed to empower certain intentions and you may choose one that suits you, or you can "charge" a wand that attracts you with any intention you choose. The power of the wand comes from your beliefs and emotions about it, which gives you a lot of freedom regarding the actual wand you select.
When you find the right one, it will be a lot like recognizing an old friend and you should have no doubts. Once you have your wand, you can personalize it by placing it in a special place, or 'charging' it with energies that focus the purpose. These actions raise the vibrations of the wand itself, and the longer you use your wand, the more palpable these vibrations become.
The wand is the symbol of life, of the energy which makes us alive. It is also symbolic of the phallus and is sacred to the God. It is the tool of the element of Fire, although in some traditions it is interchangeable with the athame and so takes the place as Air's tool as well.
Select a wand which is about the same size as the length from the tip of your index finger to your elbow. Remember to thank the tree for its sacrifice.
Of course not all wands are made from wood. Pick a wand made from the material which best appeals to your style of working.
Wand Blessing
Calm and center yourself, reach out your mind. When you are ready, focus on your wand and say:
"I cleanse and purify this tool of my craft from all past energies and negativity."
Using your right hand push all the negative energies out from the wand, visualize them leaving the wand.
In love and in trust, In peace and in wisdom, I bless this tool of my craft.”

How to Use a Magic Wand
Self-Empowerment:
Perhaps the simplest way is to keep the wand with you as much as possible, using it as a reminder of your intention. Wear it, place it where you will see it often, and allow the subtle energies surrounding it to permeate your awareness and aura.
If you want to drive the intention deeper into your psyche or your body, you can use the wand during meditation and/or have it present during ritual or ceremony. Hold a vision of your intention in your mind, and touch the wand in whatever place seems appropriate to you. Touch crystals or beads, or fill your awareness with a color from the wand. Fill your inner self with awareness of the wand as you meditate, and enhance the purpose of your meditation or ritual. Afterwards, allow yourself to be reminded of the intention whenever you see the wand.
Healing:
Select a wand that resonates with overall healing energies that speak to you, such as chakra balancing, or the energies of high beings or spirit guides. Choose a wand that you sense will assist you in visualizing "wholeness" and in easing disease." Smaller wands work well as personal tools and for very specific, targeted healing purpose. If you work with other individuals or groups, the energies will be easier to access if your wand is larger. Become aware of the healing properties associated with certain stones, colors, and symbols, and choose a wand with these elements.
Since you can merge your own intent with any wand by charging it, any wand will work for any purpose. However, there are some qualities that intrinsically merge with your purpose, and choosing a wand that has these qualities in the first place can empower your own "magic."
The Wand In History:
Wizards and Witches have been seen carrying a wand, a staff or a stick, believed to have magical powers, and the ability to produce and effect by tapping, positioning or waving it.
The wand itself holds no magic, but is used as a directional tool, to ensure that the magic can be aimed correctly at the desired target. Very much like the custom of pointing with a finger, when saying "YOU, yes YOU".
The pointing gesture itself adding power to the desired outcome, in the same way as the wand
The power of the Witch/Wizard is concentrated into the wand. The direct human will! The wand is charged with the power and aimed at the desired target. But where in history did the wand first come about?
The Druids - For the first evidence of the wand being used as a magical tool we must travel back to the time of the Druids. The Iron Age, known in modern day as 500bc to 500ad.
In the time of the Druid, magical believes were at their peak in Britain.
Druid, meaning "man with the wisdom of the wood." In the time of the Druids, the ancient Shamanic belief of the natural became an organized religion. With sacred objects, mysterious rituals, and holy sites. The Druids were highly secretive people, but even so, they did leave their mark, and archaeologists are still finding evidence of their religious beliefs today.
The Druids were believed to have a magical mist to prevent armies from fighting. They were believed to be able to call up this mist during war times to hinder the vision of attacking armies.
The Druids believed there was a root into another world full of spirits, and that water was a portal into this world. Bogs were used to offer gifts to the Gods, and luckily for modern day historians, bog water preserves objects through time, so numerous objects have been found and given insight to the life of the ancient Druids.

The Wand
Put simply a wand is an energetic tool which may be used to focus intent and what is often described as subtle energy to bring about change in oneself, in others and ones environment. Wands are fashioned from a multitude of materials and many designs.
Wands have been used in many cultures throughout history. In fact, their legacy is still seen in positions of authority in modern society, such as staffs, crooks, and scepter's wielded by church leaders and heads of state.
Wands can be made from wood, metal or indeed anything, which will conduct subtle energy. Plastics and other materials can be used to fashion wands but are not generally used because of their insulating properties. Leather was and is used in some wand designs to insulate the energy field of the practitioner from the wand. The choice of insulation is purely personal but our designs use conductive materials to link the energy field of the practitioner directly with his or her wand.
Most traditional wands were, and still are, made from wood. For those of you who may wish to fashion your own wooden wand it is important for the energy flow that the wand is of live wood. If a branch or twig is cut from a tree or plant, the life force that animates the wood will be rapidly withdrawn from the branch in order for the plant to conserve its energy.
Live wood is obtained by tuning in to the consciousness of the tree and asking that a gift of the chosen branch be given. Sit or stand with the tree for a while, spend some time getting to know the tree. Then when it feels appropriate either out loud or in your head state that you wish to be given a section of live wood to create a wand and ask that the vibration and energy be left in the section from which the wand is to be fashioned. Once you have cut the live wood thank the tree, and leave some form of exchange. The wand can then be fashioned or carved into an appropriate form and augmented with the addition of crystals, colored ribbons feathers or other items significant to you.
Wooden wands are by their very nature ideal for practitioners of earth magic, Wiccans, etc. Generally speaking, wooden wands have a very subtle, flowing natural feel to their energy. The wand was and indeed still is a part of Druidic and shamanic tool kits. The wand is used to work with the element of air, which is associated with the mental body and the intellect, hence its use as a focus for ones intent.
In contrast to wooden wands, metal-based wands are highly conductive, very directional and focused energetically. Designs may include matrices of wires or metal rods to form the wand, or more commonly a metal tube with crystals and other materials mounted in them.
In addition to using crystals to enhance a wooden or metal wand, some wands are fashioned from pure crystal. In order to form the blocks of crystal into a wand specialist tooling is generally required depending on the hardness of the crystal.
While it is possible to fashion a quartz wand using carborundum paper abrasive or sandpaper), it will take a very long time, and a lot of elbow power. These wands are best purchased ready made but can easily be augmented with the addition of extra crystals or built into metal or wooden wands if so desired.
Once the basic wand of whatever material is formed the energy may be augmented by the addition of other crystals. These crystals will blend their vibrations with that of the wand in order to bring about positive change. Winding conductive materials such as metal wire around the wand can further augment the energy of the wand. If a spiral is wound down the piece, or even multiple spirals, then the energy flow will be further amplified. Using these basic principles, the harmonics of a wand can be tailored to suit any practitioner.
Once having obtained your wand, either after purchasing one or making your own, what to do with it?
The simple answer will be to follow your own intuition, but the following tried and tested techniques have worked for us.
Wands are usually rod like in construction; generally one end collects energy which is focused down the wand and directed via a crystal or a point to bring about change. One of the most common designs uses a sphere as the collector and a point at the other end as a director.
Wands are normally held in the right hand. Energetically we receive energy with the left hand and give with the right hand. Focus your intent and then direct the energy through the wand to the recipient. The wand may be used in this fashion to draw sacred symbols, connect crystals in a grid or matrix, or direct energy to a person, time or place.
One of the prime uses of a wand is in healing. The wand may be used in whatever fashion feels appropriate. The wand may be passed up and down the recipient pointed at wounds or energy blockages etc and energy will be directed in. In addition, the wand may be placed base down on the recipient in order to draw negative energy or pain etc out. Once this energy is drawn out it is important to transmute this negativity and there are a number of methods to achieve this.
A statement of intent that the negative energy removed during healing is transmuted into positive energy is one way of achieving this. Directing the energy into a vortex of purple light may also be used. Calling on guidance, angelic energies, or ascended masters such as Saint Germain to assist in the transmutation of negative energy may also be used.
After the wand has been used it should be cleansed using a smudge stick, visualization or by blowing down the wand to remove any negativity.
Wands may be laid on a recipient to balance the energy system, or to open the chakra chain. In addition to healing, wands may be used as an aid to meditation simply by holding the wand whilst in the meditative state.
A good wand is a powerful partner in any form of energy work. Tell it what you want it to do, give the wand clear instruction on what you want doing, i.e. place it at the feet of the recipient and ask the wand to open the chakra chain and dissolve any negative energies it encounters. Then turn it around and ask that it draws any negativity it has dissolved from the person's energy field. Of course, thank the wand and those who have worked through the wand for their efforts.
Never point your wand at anyone without the intent to heal or bring about positive change, and again never without his or her permission. Take care of your wand and always cleanse it after use.
In time, most practitioners develop a method of working with the wand, which suits them. This article is intended as a general guide to enable you to develop a technique, which works for you. Feel free to experiment, but we recommend that before working with any energetic process a simple affirmation that what will take place occurs for the highest good of yourself and any recipient is good practice.
Your wand is a powerful tool for change at all levels and as such should be used with responsibility.
